About Soundpainting:
Soundpainting is the universal live composing sign language created by Walter Thompson for musicians, dancers, actors, poets, and visual artists working in the medium of structured improvisations. At present, the language comprises over 800 gestures signed by the composer/conductor indicating the type of improvisation desired of the performers. Direction of the composition is gained through the parameters of each set of signed gestures.
• the following was the introduction written for Summer Institute Arrivees in July.
Why Improv 404? ‘cuz virtually NO one doesn’t improvise these days, having strung together literally billions or trillions of sentences without having known what they were about to say. so no need for Improv 101 anymore. And if you’ve ever clicked on a link to nowhere in cyberspace, you’ll find a 404… page not found. Time to start from scratch.
For those of you in Todd’s two improv ensembles, OR for ANYONE here at Banglewood who wants to understand more about themselves in relationship to ‘real-time composition’ or ‘improvisation’, both labels which pale in comparison to the actual thing, OR for anyone primarily engaged in doing written music here at Banglewood, Improvisation, when taken on as a practice, changes your relationship to music. Period.
I will seriously try to accomodate anyone who wishes to work on any level inside this discipline. y’all come.
We’ll be exploring SoundPainting, the system of visual symbols developed by Walter Thompson, Viola Spolin’s Theater Games (they work brilliantly for musical creation), and individual philosophy. For now, however, check out SoundPainting here.

Todd!
How are you?!
For some reason these mp3′s aren’t playable anymore. I was wondering if there was some way I could download one or two of them, if you still have them–because I wanted to send one on an audition tape due February 5th for a Bobby McFerrin workshop. Please let me know!
Hope you’re doing well!
